Behavioral Intervention
Sometimes, children engage in problem behaviors that are persistent and become difficult for parents to manage. Behavioral Intervention Services offers a more focused and comprehensive approach to treating these behaviors.
Behavioral Intervention Services involve an assessment of the problem behaviors to understand what, in your child’s context, might be contributing to the behavior, and using the results of this assessment to inform the development of a Behavioral Intervention Plan (BIP).
This plan involves applying specific techniques to encourage desirable behaviors and reduce or eliminate undesirable ones. Our BCBAs will review and model the BIP to parents or caregivers, evaluate any changes based on data, and make necessary adjustments to the program.

Skill-Based Treatment (SBT)
Although most children engage in problem behavior, for some, these behaviors occur too frequently and can become severe, sometimes risking injury to the child themselves or others around them. These severe problem behaviors may include headbanging, physical aggression, property destruction, and elopement.
Skill-based treatment is a cutting-edge program that uses a trauma-informed approach to treat severe problem behavior. This means that treatment is implemented in a safe, compassionate, and supportive environment.
Dr. Gregory Hanley (BCBA-D) and his team of researchers pioneered this evidence-based program that allows children to live free of severe problem behaviors by teaching the skills of communication, toleration (i.e., waiting for desirable activities or tolerating “no”), and cooperation. Children can then use these new skills when they encounter situations that would have normally produced problem behaviors in the past. Once these skills have been taught, they are then generalized to other contexts that are part of the child’s day to day life.
This program begins with conducting a Practical Functional Assessment (PFA) with your child, which will allow our BCBA’s to gain an understanding of what, in your child’s context, is contributing to their problem behaviors. Subsequently, the Skill-Based Treatment program is tailored to your child and implementation can begin once the PFA is complete and there is a clear understanding of the problem behavior. This program requires a minimum of 3 sessions per week, 2 of which are supervised by our BCBA’s and one which is implemented by the parent outside of the supervised sessions.
